Filming Process!

Day 1 Of Filming:

During out first day of filming we found that it began to get dark earlier, forcing our group to have to shoot a different scene. However the day was not a waste as our group became familiar with the video camera. We did manage to gather an adequate amount of footage to help us decide what needs to be changed, as well as helping finalise ideas on the way our final piece would be shot.
On Location Filming

Our group managed to have a good time whilst filming. This is what we got up to while setting up the equipment...

Teacher Feedback

Hello group 22
I like the choice of template for your blog - it looks really good.
Your blog would look even better if you kept up to date with an account of the filming and editing process as you go along: photos of you on location, vlogs of how you are getting on (you can talk about what's going well and what you need to do differently next time or re-shoot).

Keep up the great work.

Risk Assesment

There are many possible risks when it comes to filming and using the filming equipment. Here are some of the risks involved.

  1. When filming and using expensive equipment we need to be careful and make sure that all the equipment is safe and with us at all times as there is always a risk of the equipment getting damaged if it is not handled in the correct way.
  2. As we are filming some of our opening outside there is always a risk that we could trip/fall and hurt ourselves.
  3. As we are filming outside we need to be careful that we do not go out in really bad weather as we could fall or hurt ourselves.
  4. In our opening we are using props such as a cigarette, a lighter and possibly a knife. These are all major hazards and could cause potential harm if we are not careful when handling these items.
These are only some of the risks that could occur while filming.

    Sound

    We are planning to use foley sound to create the atmosphere we are trying to create. We are using foley sound as they sound more realistic and are a good way to achieve the sounds we want. We have already recorded some of our foley sound such as;

    • A lighter being lit,
    • Footsteps,
    • Door opening,
    • Music through headphones.

We still have other sounds that we would like to record such as door slamming, tapping on a glass etc. we will be recording these sounds when we start filming on Tuesday 14th February.
Throughout our opening we want there to be a beat in the background. We also need to record her parents talking to her and people shouting abuse. We want it to be like we can hear her thoughts and what is inside her head.

    Last minute changes

After presenting the pitch on Monday we were asked to think about some changes and were advised to keep it simple because they felt it was too dense for a 2 minute opening, for that reason we have decided to change our opening. we have taken out the countdown because we felt it became slightly irrelevant and takes up too much times - this meant we ha

Sounds which we hare planning to use

Now, Obviously we want to use sound in our opening and we will be creating our own sounds which are stated below.
    Foley sounds such as:

    • Lighter spark
    • Tapping (fiddling with glass)
    • Headphone music & radio
    • Gulping
    • Click sound from tablet bottle
    • voices of Freinds and Parents
    • Door slaming
    • Dubstep Sound

Now that we have learned how to use soundtrack pro during the Arlington road project we are now familiar with the software so we are able to use soundtrack pro at a decent level. Hopefully our sound quality will be up to the high standard we want it to be at so that it creates a chilling atmosphere.

where our inspiration came from to create our main charcter.

We found that producing a psychological thirller would give us a chance to create interesting female characters that other young adults can relate by there process of mind for example the girl from 'angel dust' inspired us to make a pschological thriller becuase we liked the idea of having confused, innocent teenagers where characters must resolve conflicts with their own minds. Usually, this conflict is an effort to understand something that has happened to them.

    Risk assessment

    Potential Risks

    • As we are filming outside there are risks that we could either trip or fall over which could lead to to hurting ourselves or damaging expensive equipment
    • Another potential hazzard of filming outside is that the weatcher could cause injury and damage equipment.
    • As our props consist of a lighter, knife and cigarette there are many serious injuries that could take place. In order to prevent any damage we will handle with care and act responsibly around people if it is in our possession.
    • We will also make sure that someone is with the equipment at all time, we will treat it with the utmost respect as we do not want to loose any work and have to pay for lost equipment.

The Numbers in red refer to when we will have the equipment we are hoping to start filming on the 14th of February. The dates coloured in brighter green (14th, 15th and 16th) are the days we will be filming, on the 17th we are hoping to have had everything filmed and all sounds recorded so we have our weekends free to complete any blogging tasks. however, we have kept that day free incase we feel we need more footage or change our minds about shots, sounds etc. We will then be hading in all our equipment on the 20th of February, the first day back to college.

Who we think would distribute our film.

They have produced and distributed many successful british films such as Revolver Entertainment is a marketing-lead, all rights film distribution company. Founded in 1997, the company has operations in both London and Los Angeles.

How do Independent Films Achieve their Success?

This independents films aren't as successful as the Hollywood Films, this is because of the low budget. The Independent films don't get a lot of money from both important jobs: production and distribution. Through 'Viral Marketing', there are some Independent British Films that are recognised worldwide.

Viral marketing depends on a high pass-along rate from person to person. If a large percentage of recipients forward something to a large number of friends, the overall growth snowballs very quickly. If the pass-along numbers get too low, the overall growth quickly fizzles.
At the height of B2C it seemed as if every startup had a viral component to its strategy, or at least claimed to have one. However, relatively few marketing viruses achieve success on a scale similar to Hotmail, widely cited as the first example of viral marketing.

Independent British films it can be advertised by publishing it in the internet, magazines and hopefully this will bring more profit that what has been used already in the production and distribution area.

    Film treatment

    Basic Film idea

Our film is based on a a 17 year old girl who suffers from schizophrenia. In the past she had faced severe bullying which she constantly flash backs upon hearing the voices of those who tormented her. As she grew up she fell into the wrong social groups, because she felt she had to constantly please everyone around her. Ultimatley this leads to her drinking and smoking. One morning she wakes up with bruises on her body but has no idea where they came from. As the film progresses she recieves a variety of threatening letters and more strange injuries. This leads her to a loss in confidence and is unable to trust the people around her as she believes someone is out to get her. Towards the end of the film we discover that she has a split personality and is infact self harming. The entire film is based upon how she stuggles to overcome her addiction and the consequences it leaves her such as: being excluded from her 16th for for irresponsible behaviour and she is then put on a warning at her work place for being unfit for work (drunk). But at her work place she forms a close freindship with the receptionist,, stacey who helps her come of the drugs and limit the amount of drinking.  In the end we see her 2 years later recieving her A level certificates, working at a youth charity and still close with stacey.

    Our target audience

We are Aiming to targer this film at teenagers so it would probably be rated 15 by bbfc (british board of film classification) so teenager fro 15 up to 25 is what we are aiming at.

The film is mainly targetted to teenagers becuase it follows the life of a teenagers throughher life. It involves things such drugs, alcohol and many out of control parties. It shows what many teenagers, wish their life was like – full of excitement and even though it does show the negative parts of life, in comparison it makes drugs look inviting and fun.

People who wish they lived that 'out of control' life.

    Costumes and Props

Props are important in order ti set the scene and allows the viewer to establish what is happening it also give the overall film a sense of realism becuase without props it wouldn't be as realistic as you would have to mime and imagine these props are around you.

Here are most of the props we will be using in order to film our opening,

    Locations and Potential locations

Here are the locations we will be filming in, As you can see the estate is full of lights so we wouldn't have any problem filming at night however, we want to film around 6pm so we get a cold, dull eerie atmosphere and also so that the quality comes out better on camera.

We chose a location like this because not many people around this area so it will be quite and easy to film in. Also this decreases the amount controversy especially if people have a problem being filmed.

This also means we are at less of a risk to have equipment being damaged or stolen as we will have all the equipment with us at all time.

    Initital ideas

    Production Schedule

We have book the camera for over half term and will start our filling on either the 14th or 15th of Feburary. We are planning to film on the wednesday and thursday and possibly friday if we need any extra shots. We are also going to have to spend an hour or two fixing everything up and making sure our props are in the right place, etc.

    Inspiration

We had alot of inspiration from many places throught our research.  Our general idea for our main character being a young girl came from a previous students opening which we were shown as an example opening. We used the idea of a vunreble teenage girl to create a good sotryline.

Our movie is a aimed at young adults and teenagers. We decided to use a young girl to suggest that she is vunreable. This is not the only opening that influenced our decision, we came to a decision on this type of movie as we all enjoy thrillers and thought it would create an exciting opening.
We have been indecisive about many part of our opening as we all have different ideas and things that we want to include. we have come to an aggreement and have included ideas that we have all suggested. This is why we believe our opening is good, intresting and action packed.

Planning - the treatment of whole film

    Treatment of our whole film
We have chosen to do a psychological thriller based on a teenage girl suffering from schizophrenia. She is very troubled and has been through alot over the fast couple of years, she has been faced with many difficult situations through her life. She has had a bad past, growing up and mixing with the wrong group of people. she has resorted to drinking and smoking over the years as a result of her past abuse. She is a very loney character.

    Planning - Target Audience

The target audience for a thriller is generally young adults between the ages of 16 - 25. A target audience can change due to the sub genre of the thriller. Our film is a psychological thriller and is going to be aimed at teenages and young adults. Our main character is a young girl who has various problems. We believe this will appeal to young people as they can relate to some of the problems our character faces throiughtout the film. We also believe our discrete opening will attract younger viewers as it is going to be quite fast and 'in yoiur face' which is appealing to teenagers as it is exciting. We are looking at the psychological problems of this young girl and although psychological thrillers are usually aimed at older adults we believe that this intresting storyline will attract younger adults even though it is complicated.

    Planning - Costumes and Props

Props and Costumes are very important in my opinion as they help set a mood and atmosphere and suggest the genre of the film very quickly. Typical props used in a thriller are usually dangeruos things such as weapons. In our opening we are planning to use props such as cigarettes, lighters, a knife and empty beer cans. we are still unsure of what props we are going to use exactly but here are some possible ideas
    Cigarette
    Empty Beer can
    A knife
    A Lighter

    Planned Location Shots

Here are more locations we plan to visit. As there are a lot of street lights we should not have a problem filming at night time especially as this would create a good atmosphere for our opening.

The area is very quiet so we should not get interupted by those passing by and also there is a view of car passing in the backround, which was desired in order to create an effect to match the mood.

Skills Audit to date what you have learned about equipment and software and blogging skills.

Over the course I have learnt how to use various software, such as Final Cut Pro. Learning to use this programme was crucial as after filming our footage we needed to be able to edit and construct scenes to put our thriller together. Using Final Cut Pro you can also add title sequences to include a film title as well as opening credits, which will make our thriller, look more professional.  Sound is also a big part of editing so the use of Sound Track Pro was necessary as we could add on extra sounds, including Foley sounds as during filming certain sounds may not be picked up. Sound Track pro also allows you to add background music which is vital for a thriller as it can be said that the music is the most important aspect.

In order to get our edited footage onto our blog it needed to be compressed using Mpeg. Doing so was a simple process as there were already blogger ‘pre-sets’ available so all that had to be done was uploading the required file.  As blogging is also a key part of our course this proved to be even more helpful as it provided an alternative to the conventional screen shots.

Through doing different blogging tasks I have tried to post blogs in creative ways instead of just writing. I have posted photos of work I have completed, I have uploaded video analysis’s and slide shows. I tried to use more inviting texts and various colours and sizes to highlight key information.  Also on our blog we completed a health and safety tutorial on the camera equipment and tripods and how to use them appropriately.

    Film Institution

    Film Institution

There are THREE main processes that Media Institution follow:

Production.- This is the making of the media
Distribution.- This is the advertising to the audience, is the promotion.
Exchange.- This is the profit that comes from the exchange in all the advertising.

However, now we must concentrate in the distribution of our film. For this purpose we have to focus on the way we are to do the advertising for the thriller film. There are several Film Institutions, but for this film we are to concentrate on two main ones: Hollywood and The Independent British.

In order to get a clearer idea of what a DISTRIBUTOR is and does, is recommendable to first of all give a breve synopsis of what it is. A distributor acts a as a connection between the producers of the film and the audience. To reach and fulfil this expectations, the Distributors make use of several alternatives as for example: Cinema adverts, DVD, adverts on the TV and adverts around the city in buses or in the houses' walls. Each Distributor has a different style, ideas, funding, and last but not least the marketing plan. Being a Distributor now days is more competitive because of all the others Distributors around the city, country, and continent are trying to gain more audiences for their own projects.
The job of a Distributor is one of the most complicated ones as he/she has to make in-numerous decisions along the way:

    • Think of a possible date for the release of the film
    • Decide in which and how many times the advert is to be displayed
    • Think of ways in which the audience can be attracted to the film, in many cases this is done by inviting to the premier famous actors and actresses.
    • They have to design adverts that are eye catching, so everyone can relate to them.

    Editing Process For Prelim

    Prelim Edited With Sound

    First Attempt Adding Sound

    Evaluation

Overall our prelim video worked out quite well. We successfully followed the 180 degree rule by keeping the camera filming from the same side of both characters. We also included a successful matchcut showing a character going to open a door, which then cuts to their hand turning the handle.
There were also some problems we faced as there were some missing shot reverse shots during character dialogue where one charater would be speaking but you did not see there face. Also there was a scene where we filmed a door but the reflection of the camera was captured.
