Research Task

Thriller Movie

Over the holidays we were asked to watch a thriller movie and pick out elements which inspire me such as the camera, narrative, sound or editing. The movie which I have chosen is Black swan.

This scene for me in particular created a chilling mood and added a twist in the narrative because of the disturbing digetic sound of Tchaikovsky's music which created a strange and fearsome sound. The significance of the medium shot allows the audience to engage with mixed emotions conveyed through this scene and lets the audience view enough eccentricity through the shot by the character demonstrating contrasting emotions of anxiousness and evilness. Another thing I find interesting about this shot is that the editing of having two of same girl facing the wrong way in the mirror creates  an unsettling feel as it is unrealistic as fits in perfectly to the thriller genre.

Personally, I found this scene extremely uncomfortable to watch however, I think that was it's purpose and succeeded because it besides demonstrates the characters twisted and confused journey into becoming the perfect black swan. This scene was quite symbolic in some way because whilst the scene went on, the wings on the tattoo began to feel real and alive, which may have may have signified the the characters fight in becoming the faultless black swan.

This shot is a big close up (BCU) and is used to emphasize on the red eyes to show that she has lost herself and has transformed into the black swan. This shot suggests fury and anger but also gives a sense of innocenc and the BCU works extremely effectively because the audience can finally see that Nina (the girl) has completed her journey in becoming the perfect black swan.

This video is the scene in which Nina performs the final black swan dance and she enters the stage after killing a body, she performs with passion and sensuality, the sprouting feathers, her arms become black wings and she finally losses herself and transforms in to the black. At the end of the act, she recieves a standing ovation. For me this scene symbolizes the exact purpose of Tchaikovsky's music it creates a surreal and sinister tone through the soft ballet moves. During the dance, the camera follows her every move which suggests her dominance by this dance, because she has overcome herself and camera acts as it is chasing after and cannot keep up.
